Farrah's Story

In my previous post I alluded to Farrah's Story. For those of you who may not know, Farrah Fawcett was diagnosed w/ stage 4 cancer a few years back. A documentary aired this past week about her struggle and fight to stay alive.

It was so hard for me to watch, for as most of you know (or will find out by reading this blog), I witnessed my own mother go through the same fight. Watching this took me right back to those short months before my mom died... all the doctors, radiation, chemo, medical jargon, grim prognosis, the quick decline of health, and eventual slow, agonizing death.

There were so many things about Farrah that reminded me of my own mom. My mom was this beautiful, tiny little spitfire. She could switch from being deeply serious to surprisingly carefree and a bit wild. She kept a journal her whole life, even while she was sick - like Farrah did in this documentary. And most of all, my mom was a fighter. She is one of strongest people I have ever known to this day. Maybe a lil too strong. Even in her death... she was helping everyone else cope w/ her grim prognosis - but who was there for her? ...That still haunts me to this day.

And as you will see in this documentary... the cancer completely takes over. You will see as a beautiful, hopeful Farrah turns into a hollow of a person. It's sad and it angers me... but it is exactly what happened to my mom. She became more unrecognizable as the weeks and months passed. It makes me want to scream how unfair it all is.

I encourage you to watch this documentary. It's long, but worth every minute. I can't think of many people whose lives haven't been touched by cancer. It seems that if someone hasn't battled cancer themselves, they either have experienced the loss of a loved one or know someone who has. This is the real side of cancer... at least terminal cancer. Please take the time to watch (even if it's in short installments)... Farrah has a story worth telling and seeing.

[please feel free to comment on what you thought about the documentary... thoughts provoked, questions, etc...]
