It was exactly one year before my mom would lose her battle w/ cancer that she took her only grandchildren on their first real vacation. She had been talking about and looking forward to this for so long. Cassidy was 4,
Savannah 8… and they had never seen the beach.

Mom took them to
Tybee Island – a non-commercialized island that has a small hometown feel. It happened to be the same place she always took us when we were children.

My mom had lived there years back when she met and married my dad. She would tell us that she would walk the beach for hours while 8-9 months pregnant w/ my sister. When she went into labor, my dad had to take her to
Savannah, GA… for there was no hospital on the island.
Savannah was destined to visit the place she was named after and where her own mother had been born.

The girls were having so much fun. It was the first time they had got to experience anything like this. And to top it off... they were w/ their Nana.

I only wish it could have lasted longer. The long awaited vacation came to an abrupt end when they got a call that my mom's mother-in-law was very sick. My mom, being who she was, wanted to rush home to take care of her dying mother-in-law... not knowing what she herself would soon be facing...
candace, we have so much in common and i wish that we could talk face to face. my daddy and i were planning a last vacation to Tybee Island when he died. he said that was his favorite place in the world...Kenneth hadnt been to the ocean either.... i cried and cried when i first read your blogs. but dont feel bad,its good to cry. and i want you to know that i also have PCOS and i have my precious son. it has been a difficult struggle with alot of heartbreak. but he is worth it all...
ReplyDeleteTammy - we should definitely try to see each other when I come to TN toward the end of July. We have like 20 yrs to catch up on!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading and for your encouragement. I need it! And I'm curious to hear stories about Bud... mom talked about him a lot. He was her first love.
